30th of June 2020, Workshop on “Gender Equality and Diversity”

 

Twelve staff members of the Baltic Gender consortium (CAU, GEOMAR, Kiel UAS) participated in the online workshop, which was led by Dr. Sabine Blackmore, a coach specialized in academia issues and gender equality. The workshop focused on obstacles, challenges and commonalities between gender equality and diversity. 

 

 

 

 

   

18th of June 2020, Baltic Gender Final Conference, Online

Baltic Gender project is ending at the end of August 2020 after 4 years of fruitful collaboration between its eight partner institutions in the Baltic Sea region.

On the 18th of June 2020, Baltic Gender held its final conference with the participation of 200 participants from all over Europe and the rest of the world. The opening talk given by the project coordinator, Prof. Katja Matthes, was followed by four impulse presentations given by members of the project on key resources produced by Baltic Gender. These resources can be used to advance gender equality and to support structural changes in marine science. The presentations were followed by an intense discussion, which was fed by questions from the participants and moderated by Prof. Susan Buckingham from the Advisory Board of the project.

17th of June 2020, Baltic Gender Annual Meeting

On the 17th of June 2020, the fifth annual meeting was held online. The focus of the meeting was the implementation and the progress of the Gender Equality Plans in the partner institutes and the sustainability of the project results.

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

   

6th of March 2020, SYKE had its 7th grassroot meeting with 22 participants

 

The event was organised under the title ”SYKE equality work in the face of the new decade".This event sought to generate discussion about the worth of the Baltic Gender measures (such as mentoring programme, portfolio sparring and leadership training) for SYKE and for the development of its Gender Equality Programme. The event was opened by the Director General Lea Kauppi, who provided summary of the “state of art” of (gender) equality promotion in SYKE. After that a group of SYKE employees told about their experiences about Baltic Gender activities. The feedback was very positive, and there was a general understanding that many of the measures should be integrated to SYKE GEP.

The ending of the Baltic Gender project was seen as regrettable, but the joint vision was that many of the activities could be continued.

 

 

   

20th of February 2020, Grass-root network at the Marine Research Insititute of KU initiated a leadership workshop for all staff

On the 20th of February, the grass-root network at the Marine Research Institute of Klaipeda University initiated a leadership workshop for all staff. During the workshop participants watched the DVD talk "The Ideal Team Player" by American speaker and writer Patrick Lencioni from Global Leadership Summit, as well as evaluated themselves with the self-assessment tool, based on Patrick Lencioni’s book, The Ideal Team Player.

 
   

18th to 19th March 2020, 3. Annual Baltic Gender Mentee Meeting at the IOW, Rostock. 

As integral part of the second round, all mentees in the second program round will come together at the Leibniz Institute for Baltic Sea Research Warnemünde. On each of the two meeting days, one thematic workshop will be offered. Besides this core program, time will be given for reflection and to exchange views and continue the day’s talks in a relaxed and informal atmosphere. Beyond the mentees and mentors in the running program, all mentees and mentors from the previous program round are cordially invited to join the closing event.

This meeting is cancelled due to precaution measures with regard to the current spread of infections by the corona virus in Germany.  

 

 

         
         
   

 

2nd Baltic Gender Leadership course 10-12 February 2020, Lund University, Sweden

Twenty participants attended the second leadership course arranged by Baltic Gender in Lund, Sweden. An intensive exercise where all participants introduced themselves to the others on a one-to-one basis started the course on Monday evening. Tuesday morning the sessions focused on statistics from the European Union and the partner organizations and unconscious bias and how this bias can be overcome. In the afternoon different thinking styles and how to influence others were the main topics introduced by consultants from the Barefoot thinking company ltd. Wednesday morning included coaching and mentoring conversations and tools for strategic thinking. Before the course ended an action plan was written down and discussions on how leaders can be gender aware in their roles as leaders. Apart from the skills and knowledge achieved the participants found the networking with staff from other organizations an important add-on. 

 

   

 

   

28th November 2019 - Workshop on"Border violations in Academia - How to deal with and prevent sexualised violations", GEOMAR, Kiel

Ten persons from Kiel institutions (CAU Kiel, GEOMAR, UAS Kiel) participated at the workshop which was led by Dr. Sabine Blackmore, a coach specialised in academia issues and gender equality. Topics of the agenda were e.g. the legal framework and how to recognize as well as communicate border violations. The focus was on stays on cruises, which specific regards female researchers in marine science.

 
   

25th October 2019 – "Assertiveness and Self-Defense Training for women", CAU, Kiel 

17 women from GEOMAR, CAU and Kiel UAS took part at the self-defense and assertiveness training at CAU, Kiel. The workshop was conducted by a trainer from WING Concepts academy. The female participants learned useful tools for prevention, assertiveness and self-defense with exercises to train mental and physical strengths. 

The next workshop on “border violations in academia – How to deal with and prevent sexualized violations” will take place on 28th November. There are places still available. 

 
         
   

2nd July 2019 – Workshop on “Border violations in academia – How to deal with and prevent sexualized violations”, Kiel UAS.

During the workshop, which was led by Dr. Sabine Blackmore, a couch in academia and gender equality, 12 participants from Kiel UAS, CAU Kiel and GEOMAR discussed prevention measurements in the context of “research cruises” and the needs of the workshop participants. This workshop was the first in a series of workshops on “sexual harassment in institutions on higher education and research institutes” arranged by the three Kiel institutes as part of the project Baltic Gender.

The next workshop (self-defense training) will be on 25th October.

Workshop series on "sexual harassment in institutions on higher education and research institutes" in Kiel, Germany.

Three workshops on this topic will take place in Kiel, which are organized by GEOMAR, Kiel University and Kiel University of Applied Sciences.
The target group will be scientific staff from Marine Science.
The first workshop (02/07) and third workshop (28/11) will focus on "Border violations in Academia - How to deal with and prevent sexualized violations." The two workshops will be conducted by Dr. Sabine Blackmore.
The second workshop (25/10) will be an "Assertiveness and Self-Defense Training for women". It is conducted by WING CONCEPTS, an academy in martial arts and self-defense.

14 May - 15 May 2019, Annual meeting, Klaipeda

The fourth annual meeting of Baltic Gender was held in Klaipeda, Lithuania, on the 14th and 15th of May. The focus of the meeting was the implementation of Gender Equality Plans in the eight scientific institutions, which are partners of the project.

 

 

 
   

29-30 April 2019, Workshop series on "Raising awareness on gender and diversity issues in research institutions", Klaipeda, Lithuania.

On 29-30 of April, 2019 Katrien Van der Heyden from Nesma Consulting bvba, Mortsel, Belgium held a workshop series focused on gender issues in research institution for the top, middle management and researchers, also on integration of gender aspects into research content for researchers and students. There were 27 people attending the workshops.

 
   

10 April 2019, Workshop on " Gender dynamics in academic recruitment and selection", Lund

On April 10 Mathias W. Nielsen, assistant professor at Aarhus University in Denmark, held a workshop focused on gender perspectives in recruitment for the high management (faculty leaders as deans) and members of the faculties’ appointment committees at Lund University. The workshop was arranged as part of the project Baltic Gender and constituted the main part of an annually re-occurring meeting that Lund University’s vice chancellor Torbjörn von Schantz invites high-level management staff and appointment committees to. There were 36 people attending.

8 th to 10th April 2019, 2. Annual Baltic Gender Mentee Meeting, Rostock

Thirteen junior female scientists from marine research met at the Leibniz Institute for Baltic Sea Research Warnemünde within the framework of the second Baltic Gender Mentoring Meeting. The participants from both rounds of the mentoring program have been engaged in intensive workshops on questions of gender equality, the tension between management and communication as well as conflict management in academia. They also took the opportunity to network with each other and to talk directly with experienced marine researchers in leadership positions, such as two professors of the University of Rostock, Inna Sokolova and Joanna Waniek. The program is part of the EU-project Baltic Gender: eight scientific institutions from five Baltic Sea States want to improve especially the career opportunities of women in marine research, which is still male-dominated.

 
   

28th February to 1st March 2019, Workshop on "Gender Equality and Gender-Conscious Teaching in Science“, Kiel

The 2-days workshop focused on gender & diversity aspects in academic teaching, provided methods and tools for gender- and diversity-sensitive lecturing and, moreover, gave space for lively discussions. The training was led by Pia Garske, a political scientist from the University of Göttingen, who is well-known for her work also beyond Germany. The participants gained insights and new perspectives on the various effects of gender and diversity on performance and interpersonal behavior of students and staff in higher education institutions and also about different aspects of discrimination. The 11 participants from the partner institutions in Estonia, Lithuania, Sweden and Germany were an interdisciplinary mixed group. In the evening the workshop participants visited the Media Dome and the cultural centre Bunker-D located at the campus of Kiel UAS.

 
   

22 January 2019, Training on gender and equality for top management, Helsinki SYKE

The equality training was carried out as a part of SYKE annual management forum and was targeted to all leaders, including the top management. The session was led by the gender equality and diversity consultant Sinikka Mustakallio (WoM). The equality training session was connected seamlessly to the following topic of unconscious biases given by Emma Terämä, director (SYKE) on Sustainable urbanisation programme. There were altogether 39 participants, resulting lively discussion on the subject. The participants graded the annual management forum high (4.5 of 5), especially the equality and biases sessions were highly acknowledged. To connect the equality training as a part of management training seemed to be a good way to increase the awareness on equality and implementation of gender equality plan.

14th to 16th January 2019, Workshops on "Gender in Research", Rostock

Unconscious bias concerns everyone. That´s why a workshop series on aspects of gender equality and diversity in research was set up at the Leibniz Institute for Baltic Sea Research Warnemünde to sensitize scientific and administrative staff members including top-management, leaders and young scientists. The training was made possible due to financial support of BG. A special workshop for PhD students and PostDocs is embedded in the IOW "Skills Week" 2019 to which all IOW Bachelor and master students as well as PhD candidates and PostDocs are invited. Sociologist and gender expert Katrien Van der Heyden (Nesma Consulting bvba, Mortsel, Belgium) will familiarize the participants with current concepts on gender and diversity. Challenges and tips for promotion of equal opportunities in research institutions shall be discussed and much room shall be given for exchange of experiences.

 
   

29 November 2018, Workshop on gender and equality for middle managers, Helsinki SYKE

The equality workshop was targeted to SYKE middle management and organized as half-a-day-training. The session was led by the gender equality and diversity consultant Sinikka Mustakallio (WoM).

There were altogether seven participants and based on the small group size the discussions were very open and the challenges in SYKE equity promotion were addressed. The participants graded the quality of training high (4.7 of 5). They were especially thanking the trainer’s high knowledge and experience, not forgetting to mention good discussions and structure of the workshop.

 
   

04 September 2018, Workshop on “Gendered Innovations in Science and Engineering”, Kiel

How does sex and gender apply to research, especially to marine science and technology? During the workshop, which was led by Prof. Londa Schiebinger from Stanfort University and Director of “Gendered Innovations in Science, Medicine, Engineering, and Environment Project” 16 participants from Geomar, CAU, Kiel UAS and IOW discussed very lively about the relevance of sex and gender in their own research questions. The well-known Prof. Londa Schiebinger introduced several case studies on how gender analysis can profoundly enhance human knowledge in these areas and the participants discussed how gender analysis could be applicable to shape their research questions.

 
   

01 August 2018 - 31 July 2020,  Mentoring

The second round of the Baltic Gender Mentoring Scheme is dedicated to female 3rd year PhD students, (early to mid-career) female marine scientists holding a doctoral degree and female engineers. The scheme starts in August 2018 and will continue for 2 years providing each successful mentee with financial support (3.000 €), e.g. for conference or/and publication fees, travel costs to mentor and professional training courses. The deadline for applications has been extended until 30.06.2018. Please see the flyer for more information.

30-31 May 2018, Annual meeting, Tallinn

The third annual meeting of Baltic Gender was held in Tallinn, Estonia, on the 30th and 31st of May. The focus of the meeting was on the implementation of Gender Equality Plans in the eight scientific institutions, which are partners of the project. Sex-segregated data on qualitative and quantitative indicators, which show the status-quo of gender issues in the institutions, were presented. The results of the indicator data, together with a wealth of information derived from other tasks of the Baltic Gender project, will lead to recommendations for new or improved targets, actions and measures for the Gender Equality Plan of each partner institution. 

 
   

29 May 2018, Workshop on “Methods and test cases to include gender aspects in marine research”, Tallinn

The workshop provided a space for the testing of a novel method protocol for integrating a gender dimension (gender aspects) into marine research. The participants were the Baltic Gender partners and advisory board members. The objectives of this workshop are to act as the first common discussion ground for the development of a method protocol and to specify the testing strategies to be followed in the participating institutions.

 
   

16−17 April 2018, 1st Mentoring Meeting, Rostock

This meeting brought together the participants of the first round of the Baltic Gender Mentoring Scheme. For the mentees, it was the first opportunity to meet and get to know each other. As the meeting was open to the mentors as well, two mentors followed the invitation to take part in the workshops offered during the two days of the meeting. The main purpose was to enable the exchange between the participants and to provide basic knowledge on gender and diversity. Therefore, this year's event centered on a workshop on gender in research complemented by a science coaching. A guided tour through the scientific exhibition and Günter Grass exhibits of the Leibniz Institute for Baltic Sea Science rounded off the event.

 
   

03 April 2018, Course on "How to understand and promote gender equality in the organization", Tallinn

The training course, led by Ülle-Marike Papp and Riina Kütt, was attended by the high and middle management as well as the leaders at UT-EMI. The following topics were covered:

  • ABC of gender equality
  • Gender issues in science (history, scientific studies and surveys, and emphasis).
  • Gender issues in the organization.
  • Gender Equality Plan (analysis, planning, implementation, monitoring, factors of success, obstacles). 
  • Mapping the situation, identifying priorities.
  • Useful materials for dealing with gender issues within the organization.
 

   

26-28 February 2018, Course on "Gender and leadership", Lund 

The course was led by the Barefoot Thinking Company Ltd with the aim of training female and male scientists from the partner organisations of Baltic Gender in leadership measures and at the same time raising awareness of the current gender structures within and among the organisations. The modules included unconscious bias, thinking styles, how to give feedback and the value of active listening, communication challenges and strategic thinking. With twenty-four participants from the partner organizations participating, the venue was full of energy during the discussions. The take-home message of the course is that awareness and leadership are intermixed and we can all improve.

 

   

04 September 2017 - 05 November 2017 Creative Contest for Youth (ages 14-18)

Baltic Gender recieved 29 artworks submissions (youth of age 14-18) for the Youth Creative Contest designed to urge the youth to develop an understanding of gender issues related to marine science and technology. The title of the contest was Insight into women in Marine Science and Technology

01 October 2017 - 30 September 2019,  Mentoring

The first round of the Baltic Gender Mentoring Scheme is dedicated to early career female marine scientists (holding a doctoral degree for less than 4 years) and engineers (having their highest degree for less than 4 years), who are employed at the participating institutions. The first round started in October 2017 and will continue for 2 years providing each successful mentee with financial support (3.000 €), e.g. for conference or/and publication fees, travel costs to mentor and professional training courses.

Mentees and mentors will get together during a first meeting to be held on the 16-17 April 2018 at the IOW, Warnemünde. The agenda of this meeting includes a training on gender competence for the mentees and mentors, provided by Katrien Van der Heyden (NESMA Consulting bvba), and a career-coaching module for mentees, provided by Stephanie von Neuhoff and Holger von Neuhoff (www.movingpoints.de).

 
   

30 May - 01 June 2017, Annual meeting, Helsinki

The annual meeting of Baltic Gender was held in the SYKE premises in Helsinki between the 30th of May and 1st of June 2017. On the first day, the consortium members received a training (by Yellow Window) on setting up, implementing, monitoring and evaluating Gender Equality Plans. On the last two days, the consortium had discussions on various aspects of how GEPs will be implemented in the partner organizations.

06 - 07 October 2016, Kick-off meeting, Kiel

The kick-off meeting of Baltic Gender took place on the 6th and 7th of October at GEOMAR in Kiel, Germany. Eight partner institutions in five countries around the Baltic Sea came together to discuss the start of their work programme. The last day was dedicated to a training on “gender in research context” given by Yellow Window.

The project will run for 4 years, in which project partners will hold virtual meetings every second month and meet annually to discuss the implementation their work programme in person.
