Kiel University of Applied Sciences, Germany (Kiel UAS)


With 7.131 students (winter term 2014/2015), the Kiel University of Applied Sciences is the largest institution of its kind in Schleswig-Holstein. Currently, its six faculties (Computer Science & Electrical Engineering, Agricultural Sciences, Mechanical Engineering [incl. Naval Architecture & Maritime Engineering; Offshore Systems Engineering], Media, Social Work & Health, and Business Management) offer ca. 35 Bachelor's and Master's degrees, supplementary degrees and continuing education courses. Knowledge and technology transfer as well as interdisciplinary, application-oriented research & development and teaching are major characteristics of the university’s profile. 

Kiel UAS is committed to creating a climate that supports gender equity & diversity. It reinforces employment and educational processes that are gender appropriate, intercultural and non-discriminatory. Gender and Diversity at Kiel UAS are mainly represented by the Office of Equal Opportunities and the Institute of Interdisciplinary Gender Research and Diversity. The Office for Gender Equality gives advice to university bodies as well as staff and students on all matters pertaining to gender equality. The Institute for Interdisciplinary Gender Research and Diversity possesses broad national and international proficiency in research and knowledge transfer with regard to gender and diversity matters. Moreover, both institutions have a longstanding expertise in Gender Mainstreaming, gender analysis and gender training. 


Kiel UAS is responsible for workshops on gender awareness in teaching (WP4), coordination of the reviews of national legislations on gender equality plans (WP8).



Core Team  
Marike Schmeck is a social scientist and the equal opportunity officer of the Kiel University of Applied Sciences in Germany. She is also a lecturer in the department of Social Work and Health, where she teaches gender issues in the context of social work. She took part in international gender projects (South Africa and Kenya). Her main research interest is gender and technology  and her publications focus on gender aspects in vocational choices and personal life planning of adolescent women. Her PhD thesis was accepted by the University of Flensburg (Germany) in April 2018.
Dr. Britta Thege is scientific manager at the Institute for Interdisciplinary Gender Research and Diversity (IGD) since 1996. Since 2014 she is Deputy Equal Opportunity Commissioner at Kiel UAS. She holds a PHD in Sociology from the University of Pretoria (South Africa) and obtained a Master degree from University of Sussex (England) and a Diploma from the University of Munich (Germany). Her research interests are Gender Mainstreaming, gender in organizations, gender in in institutions of higher learning, and gender and HIV/Aids. For more than 10 years she is developing national and international gender and diversity projects, and is conducting international gender training seminars in university contexts (South Africa, Kenia, Bangladesh, and Indonesia) funded by the German Academic Exchange Service (DAAD). She was project leader of the bi-national project “Women in Science- Promoting Excellence and Innovation for Future Development” in the German-South African Year of Science 2012/2013 funded by the German Federal Ministry of Education and Research and the South African Department of Science and Technology.
Mrs. Mareike van Elsacker is the project coordinator at Kiel UAS of Baltic Gender. After her Bachelor in Political Science and Pedagogy at Kiel University and Universidad de Salamanca, Spain she did her Master degree in “research, development and management in Social Work” at Kiel UAS  and took part at the “Crossing Boarders Programme” at Karel de Grote Hogeschool  Antwerp, Belgium.
Prof. Dr. Sabah Badri-Höher obtained a MSc degree (licence on physique) from the University of Casablanca and Dipl. Ing. and Dr. Ing. (PhD) degrees in electrical engineering from the Universities of Paderborn and Erlangen-Nürnberg, Germany. She was with the Fraunhofer Institute for Integrated Circuits (IIS-A) in Erlangen, Germany, for seven years, and received the Fraunhofer Award in 1999. Since 2009, Prof. Badri-Höher has been with the Faculty of Computer Science and Electrical Engineering at the Kiel University of Applied Sciences in Kiel. Her research interests are in the general area of signal processing and communications technology and she is leading the research group Digital Signal Processing in number of patents. At present she cooperates with GEOMAR in a student project on Autonomous Underwater Vehicle development. From 2009-2014 Prof Badri-Höher was director of the Institute for Interdisciplinary Gender Research and Diversity (IGD).
  Mrs. Aleke Behrends is the administrative and financial contact for Baltic Gender at Kiel UAS.
