IOW Leibniz Institute for Baltic Sea Research, Warnemünde, Germany

IOW, the Leibniz Institute for Baltic Sea Research (Leibniz-Institut für Ostseeforschung Warnemünde) was founded in 1992. Today, it is member of the Leibniz Association (Leibniz- Gemeinschaft, WGL) and employs around 200 scientific and technical staff.

The IOW is an independent research institution specialized in interdisciplinary studies of coastal oceans and marginal seas. In particular, our work focuses on the Baltic Sea ecosystem. The institute is divided into four sections:

In addition, the institute operates the research vessel “Elisabeth Mann Borgese” with state-of- the-art equipment as well as several major laboratories and has access to high-performance computing facilities. The IOW cooperates as well with a number of small companies active in marine technology and science, allowing for successful technology and knowledge transfer into patents.

Furthermore, the IOW is active in a number of national and international committees and strategic alliances such as the German Marine Research Consortium (KDM), the German Climate Consortium (DKK), and the Leibniz Association (WGL). As WGL’s member, the IOW is in line with the DFG’s Research-Oriented Standards on Gender Equality and was certified in 2013 and 2016 with the Total E-Quality Award
