In our final conference, we presented some key resources produced by Baltic Gender, which can be used to reduce gender inequalities and support structural changes in marine science.

The presentations were followed by an open discussion that was fed by questions from the participants and moderated by Prof. Susan Buckingham.

SPEAKERS

 

Prof. Dr Katja Matthes is the coordinator of Baltic Gender and will take up the position of the Scientific Director of GEOMAR Helmholtz Centre for Ocean Research Kiel on the 1st of October, 2020. She has been a full professor of Marine Meteorology at GEOMAR and Kiel University since 2012. Her main expertise lies in the field of climate variability and climate change, especially the influence of the Sun on the climate. Prof. Matthes is the author or co-author of more than 75 peer-reviewed articles in scientific journals and a contributing author of the current 6th IPCC report. She is the founder and a board member of the GEOMAR Women’s Executive Board (WEB) and a member of the AcademiaNet, a German online platform to enhance the visibility of excellent women in science. In May 2020, she has been selected as women scientist of the month by the European Platform of Women Scientists (EPWS). 

Dr Ines Weber is a political scientist and together with Dr Marta Chiarinotti and Dr Iris Werner (work package leader) the Baltic Gender Team at Kiel University. She is interested in women's movement and feminist theory. She has also been the Gender Equal Officer at the Faculty of Arts and Humanities for many years and since 2018 has also been the Deputy Gender Equal Officer at Kiel University. Soon an essay will be published together with Ruth Kamm on gender equality plans as instruments of higher education management in “Beiträge zur Hochschulforschung”. At the conference, she will present the content of the work package "structural change" in more detail using the best practice brochure. 

Dr Britta Thege is a scientific manager at the Institute for Interdisciplinary Gender Research and Diversity (IGD) of the Kiel University of Applied Sciences  (Kiel UAS) since 1996. This work includes the development of numerous national and international scientific projects and activities and knowledge transfer. She is a lecturer in the Department of Social Work and Health of Kiel UAS. She holds a PHD in Sociology from the University of Pretoria (South Africa) and obtained a Master degree from University of Sussex (England) and a Diploma from the University of Munich (Germany). Her research interests are Gender Mainstreaming, gender in organizations, gender in in institutions of higher learning, and gender and HIV/Aids. Since 2014 Britta Thege is Deputy Equal Opportunity Commissioner at Kiel UAS.

 

Dr Helena Valve works as a Senior Researcher at the Finnish Environment Institute (SYKE). Her academic background in social sciences and in science and technology studies (STS) in particular. In SYKE, she studies environmental governance, focusing on the practicing of power in water management and marine protection. Dr Valve leads WP4 of the Baltic Gender. She has been responsible of the development of GenderWave digitool that is tailored to support incorporation of gender aspects into marine research and innovation. 

Being an art historian by education, Nikole Lorenz has been working for GEOMAR since 2015. In 2017, she took her chance to get into the field of gender equality – a matter close to her heart. Nikole is involved in the Baltic Gender project and supports the office for equal opportunities at GEOMAR, where she is among other things responsible for the initiative „Prevention of sexualized violence at sea“.

 

MODERATOR

 

Prof. Susan Buckingham is an independent researcher and consultant on gender and environmental issues. She participated in the COST Action GenderSTE (2012-2016) and led the working group on gender aspects of energy and climate change, which involved advising the EU on its gender strategy for Horizon 2020. Susan was the gender auditor for the Horizon 2020 research project URBAN-WASTE – Urban Strategies for Waste Management in Tourist Cities (2016 – 2019), and is currently the external gender expert on a UN World Maritime University research project on gender equality and women's empowerment for the UN Decade of Ocean Science for Sustainable Development. Susan is a Baltic Gender Advisory Board member. Susan has published widely on gender and environment, most recently the second edition of Gender and Environment, launched by Routldege in May 2020. She is the series editor for the Routledge book series on Gender and Environment

Data protection, confidentiality and privacy

The registration data of the participants are accessible ONLY to the project coordination team using a personal login. The coordination team ensures that all data is kept strictly confidential, that it is only used for tracking the outreach of the final conference and that no access is given to third parties or unauthorized persons - all in line with national and institutional data protection guidelines. 

During the final conference, ONLY the presentations by the speakers from the Baltic Gender consortium were recorded and disseminated after the conference with their consent. The chat, which all participants used to raise questions, was saved ONLY for internal use and will be deleted three months after the conference. 

A short post-conference survey was sent to the participants. No personal data was be collected during the survey and the anonymity is assured through the whole process of answering the online survey (please see this link to the SurveyMonkey privacy policy for more information). 

All data will be deleted at least 5 years after the end of the project.
